Sonora La Habra FFA Chapter
A New Chapter Begins
SAE Projects
At Sonora, students must have a Experience Project (SAE) while being a part of the FFA program. The projects offered are: raising large/small livestock, taking care of plants, working at the farm, farm tours, and being apart of AG construction. While maintaining their project the students must document their daily activities, finances, hours spent with their project, enterprise agreements and FFA events they have attended. These will help each student develop time management skills, responsibility, patience and the ability to work as a team.
To learn more in depth information about SAE projects offered at Sonora please watch "SAE options" video on our YouTube channel that can be found under the Media Tab.

Market Steer
Steers are one of the biggest projects we have on our farm and with that comes a lot of time that needs to be put into these projects. For a steer project you will need to take care of them daily with feeding, cleaning, and working to make sure they are show ready, temperament and soundness wise. The steer project is very rewarding and exciting to work with. They are a big commitment and once you get them as calves you’ll be raising them to 1000 pound animals to take to sell and show at fair. Despite this, steers teach you responsibility, how to be resilient and everything there is to know about cattle.
Cost: estimated $3,500

Market Lamb
Lambs are skittish animals that need a lot of work put into them to ready them for shows. Nevertheless they are incredibly fun to raise, when they come to our school you will be assigned a lamb and are expected to care for the animal daily. This means feeding, making sure they have clean water, and attending show practices along with working with them independently. These are livestock animals which means they are raised for consumption and most students auction their lambs at the fair they are attending. In this project you learn valuable skills like patience, work ethic, and the basics about lambs.

The swine SAE project is a fun and interactive project that teaches you how to properly raise a market pig for human consumption. These animals come to our farm as baby piglets and once you are assigned your animal you get to feed, exercise, and train your animal up until fair days and until the animal is sold. By managing the food intake, exercise amount, and overall mental and physical well being of your animal allows you to properly raise and care for them until completion of the project. Dairy Project
Unlike most other SAE projects here at Sonora high school, the dairy project is year round! The dairy cattle are also known as breeder cattle meaning they are kept to be bred, milked and shown by their owner. This project requires more skill and time than others. In the dairy program, the student is required to make a schedule along with others in the group to feed, clean, and water the cattle in the back pasture. When a student has a pregnant cow or heifer, it is the students job to constantly check the cattle and evaluate the actions and physical conditions of the cattle for any concerns. Depending on where one would buy their cattle and their feed from , prices may fluctuate. When buying dairy cattle the prices range from $800-$2000 for cows and anywhere from $150-$800 for a calf. Cattle feed costs around $38 a month unless it is a milking cow , then the feed price rises by around 50 dollars because pregnant/ lactating cattle need grain to help give them enough calories for the calf/ milk production.
